In early 2020, the restaurant world was changing quickly.
Like many, we found ourselves thinking about how to stay connected to our guests in a meaningful way. At Brimmer & Heeltap, that question led us somewhere simple. We started a wine club.
Not as a grand plan, but as a way to keep sharing something we love. Because wine has always been about more than what’s in the glass. It’s about connection, curiosity, and those small, joyful moments around a table.
In April 2020, Halfseas began as a monthly wine club. It grew into a pop up, then a small shop operating out of the Penny Room, and eventually, in 2024, a space of its own. From the start, the intention was clear. Share wines that feel special but approachable. Wines made by real people, rooted in place, and chosen simply because they’re exciting to drink.
No pressure. No pretense. Just thoughtful bottles and the stories behind them.
Over time, something else took shape: a community. People showed up, stayed curious, and kept coming back. That trust means everything to us.
Why the Name?
The name comes from an old English song about the sweet spot of being just a little tipsy. Not overdone. Not underwhelming. Just right.
Halfseas.
It also nods to the connection between wine and the ocean. Vineyards near the coast, bottles traveling across water, and the idea that something grown far away can still bring people together here.
And eventually, not across oceans but just across the street, opening a space near Brimmer & Heeltap felt like the natural next step.
Our Approach to Wine
Halfseas is more than a wine club. That’s just one piece of it.
It’s also a bottle shop and a wine bar, shaped by how we think about wine and hospitality.
For our wine director, Maggie, wine starts with a story. The people behind it, the place it comes from, the intention in how it’s made. Her approach is rooted in mindfulness. Gathering, sharing, connecting, and slowing down enough to actually take it all in.
For Jen, it’s always been about bringing people together. After years working in wine shops, tasting rooms, and alongside the Washington Wine Commission, opening Brimmer & Heeltap was about creating a space where food, wine, and people could intersect in a meaningful way. Halfseas is an extension of that.
Together, that means we look for wines that are thoughtful, expressive, and genuinely enjoyable. Wines that speak of place, and wines that are just as good on a Tuesday night as they are for something worth celebrating.
A Place to Land
Halfseas is a place you can come as you are.
Stop in solo or meet a friend. Stay for a quick glass or open a bottle and linger. Ask questions or simply enjoy. Our team will meet you wherever you are.
Pick up something for a weeknight dinner, find a bottle for a celebration, or discover something entirely new.
The space is small, but that’s part of its charm. It’s meant to feel easy, welcoming, and just a little bit special.
We’re really glad you’re here.
